About Me

I'm in my mid-twenties and I'm from Leicester in the middle of the United Kingdom.
By day I work as a Unix Systems Administrator at the University of Leicester Computer Centre, but this title is rather unbefitting for describing the range of things that I do. My blog should give you more of a hint.
I occasionally take on various bits of freelance consultation and programming work.
I'm a member of Jesus Fellowship Church in Leicester (details, website, photo - jpg 172Kb).
A friend of mine who studies handwriting analysis says that mine show definite signs of eccentricity and dementure. What do you think when you look at this?

An edited except from my CV (which hopefully boosts my pagerank/pigeonrank!):

"Computing has captured my interest since I received an Acorn Electron when I was four years old. Because of a missing cable I was unable to load the games from tape so I occupied myself by typing in the sample programs in BASIC and assembler from the reference manual. I very quickly learned how to program the Electron and later, at age eight, the Commodore 64. Since then I've owned a number of PCs from a 486 up to a dual-processor Pentium 4 and have been programming Windows and Unix in a variety of languages. I'm particuarly interested in supporting open source software initiatives such as GNU/Linux since the misuse of proprietry code, trade secrets and absurd patents are increasingly encumbering programmers and small businesses from competing fairly. I was awarded with the Frank May Computer Science Prize having graduated top of the class with first class honours from a computer science degree at Leicester University doing my dissertation (available here - pdf 989Kb) in distributed parallel programming with Java applets. I have been offered a full-time PhD studentship (description here - pdf 7.86Kb) between the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester for a project that involves research into the efficent compression of XML-based data whilst allowing complex in-memory queries to be performed on the compressed data. The PPARC funded studentship in e-science has close links with the AstroGrid project and benefits the wider Grid computing community. I decided not to pursue this opportunity for research because it would involve terminating too many of my other responsibilities and activities. I have grown quite interested in sound engineering through my involvement in productions run by my church and by supporting events run by Midland Sound and Lighting PA hire company. Unusally for somebody of my age I now have over fifteen years credible programming experience and I'm familiar with a wide range of computer systems, software and modern programming languages."
